Race Report

From Derrill:
Suffice it to say, "Twain's a tough kid".  But in all honesty, I've never seen so much heart in a race.  I put the heat on straight out of T1.  I saw my opening and I took it.  I got that big ring turning over and really turned the screws the first 5 miles.  When I looked back, I expected it but still couldn't believe that T closed the gap.  After that, I knew it'd come down to the run.  Yet, even so, I surged on him 3 more times before we hit T2...and the last I was certain that he was done.  But in every case, that kid just dug a little deeper.  Then the bastard surged right before T2.

T2 was a disaster.  I couldn't feel my toes and I just couldn't get my shoes on.  I looked up and T was shuffling off into the distance.  Dang it!  Finally, I just jammed my shoes on, with the tongue folded under and very uncomfortable...all in an effort to not loose any more time.  I he'd off and like T, my legs were shot.  It took a mile to close the 100 yards.  And when I did, he surged again.  So I closed again and he surged again.  I got pissed and surged back past.  Yes, I had the lead.  Now I could take a deep breath and enjoy the run in.  Surely he wouldn't be able to go agian.  But go again he did.  And this time it was right at the base of the 17% grade.  At this point, I knew that if I didn't get by before the top of the grade, the race was over.  T can run down hill and I simply can not.  At the top, I closed within 5 feet but the damage was down.  with 15 seconds, T had 50 feet.  By a min, it was 200.  And a min later, he was out of sight.  I was running by myself.  "What the heck just happened?"

It was awesome to watch

From Twain:
DiabloMan seems like a pretty tame race; 400 yard swim, 11.73 bike, 2.86 run. But the only thing "tame" is the swim, which is in a pool. The bike is a climb straight up Mt. Diablo; you get off 1.4 miles from the top and then up and back the steeps for the run.

Last year, only 28 people showed up and, surprisingly, I placed 1st overall, Derrill 2nd, and Larry Norris 3rd.

Larry bailed this year but Derrill and I were hoping to repeat. However, the field had grown to 100+ participants, including Jimmy and Derrill's masters friend, Kirt.
In any case, had to get up at 4:30 to be on time for 7AM start. Derrill and I went in the last wave to make sure we could duke it out one on one.
Meanwhile, the temps dropped from the high '50s to the low '50s as the fog started to recede.

Swim-
Derrill and I were in the same lane. He pushed the pace for the first 50 but then fell back. I was second out of the water in 5:20 and Derrill was a length behind. At the transition, I was overly worried about the cold and contemplated arm warmers. Decided to wear a vest then the backpack with running shoes for T2.
Derrill had given his T2 stuff to the race director to be hauled up and he didn't bother with putting on more clothes.

Bike
As a result-Derrill made up massive time and left T1 over 45 seconds ahead of me with the guy that finished first in the swim. Needless to say, I went from ahead to behind. At 5 miles, I finally closed on the other guy but Derrill was still ahead by at least 30 seconds.I tried to just spin instead of pushing too big a gear but my legs were fried and back was killing me. Somehow finally managed to bridge up to Derrill. We traded off the lead every few minutes; he was smooth and powerful, turning the 19 toother while I was all over the place, going from the 19 to the 26, just trying to get comfortable. Put a final push in and hit T2 about 30 seconds ahead of Derrill.

Run
Got out on the run, praying Derrill wouldn't close on me. He is a much better, fitter, runner. As we hit 1/2 way up, I could hear his footsteps and breathing. As the road pitched up even more, he was "right there". I knew we were near the turnaround point--then Derrill passed me. I told him he deserved the win. Suddenly, instead of turning at the base of the final climb-like they had us do last year-we had to run up the last 500 foot, 17% climb. Somehow I came back even with Derrill and at the top of the climb, he was right behind me. Panicked, I flew down the descent, thinking for sure that Derrill would blow by me.Incredibly, the panic worked and I was able to put 42 seconds on him.

Final time: 1:28:15, Derrill 1:28:57. Unofficially, that makes us first and second overall again this year!
Absolutely incredible racing that hard and being so close the whole race. Epic day!
Congrats to Kirt and Jimmy as well for doing this their first time. Hope we all do it again next year.
